<p>This paper examines the indispensable role of local users in designing, operating and maintaining renewable energy projects in developing countries. A case study is examined of a project in rural Africa designed and implemented with high involvement and participation of the end users. Key features of the participation process are identified for the purpose of highlighting elements of the approach that produced best results.</p>
