<p>Stalks and stover of sunflower that are Turkish origin were used as waste biomass species for production of the pyrolytic bio-char by means of slow heating under neutral conditions. Macromolecular biomass ingredients such as holocellulose, lignin, and extractives-free biomass were also subjected to the same pyrolytic process in order to determine the behavior of each ingredient under pyrolysis process and to obtain its own char. Derivative Thermogravimetric Analysis (DTG) curves that obtained under nitrogen flow from ambient to 600°C made it possible to reveal the thermal reactivity of the original biomass sample and its ingredients. Basing on the pyrolysis profiles from DTG experiments, the main regions in which the pyrolysis process takes place were determined regarding the rates of decompositions from the investigated samples. Accordingly, the temperatures at three critical points representing the initiation and the termination of the main decomposition region as well as the maximum rate of decomposition were considered. The temperatures at these three-points and additionally the final temperature at which no further moss losses take place were assumed as predictive temperatures for pyrolysis. So, these temperatures were chosen as the temperatures for the pyrolysis experiments to be conducted in a tube furnace. Pyrolysis runs in the tube furnace were done for both the biomass and its ingredients by heating under nitrogen flow of 100 mL/min from ambient to the above-mentioned four different temperatures with a heating rate of 10°C/min. The chars that obtained at different temperatures were characterized by means of BET and FTIR techniques, and their proximate analysis results were taken into account. Effects of temperature on the distribution of the functional groups were also investigated.</p>
