<p>Hydrogen has potential use as a primary energy carrier and as an alternative fuel to reduce country dependence on oil and greenhouse effect. The facility must be planned, constructed, and operated in accordance with the hydrogen properties. Safety considerations and guidelines as well as some special equipment are necessary due to unique properties of hydrogen gas. When hydrogen is planned to be produced, stored, distributed and used in a large consumption for Malaysia energy sector, a proper safety standard and code must be developed. Since hydrogen and fuel cell are viewed as one of the important technologies for Malaysia, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) has chosen hydrogen to be the top priority research. However, specific codes and standards for hydrogen generation, storage, distribution and utilization as well as infrastructure are not yet available. Currently, other standards in various countries have been surveyed; including United State, European Countries,Japan and Korea. Besides, their standard characteristics and the main items were also reviewed. This paper will review these important standards as a safety consideration for Malaysian scenario i.e., location, distance, storage, etc. Existing guidelines from other countries and associations would also be used where appropriate which the International Standards (ISO) would be used as the main citerion.</p>
