<p>Energy poverty and climate change have been concerned as factors stiffing sustainable socio-economic development of most countries around the world. Therefore, clean and renewable energy is a significant ingredient in sustainable economic and society development. Soil battery being one of the renewable energy technologies, has the potential to provide useful power. However, there is a lack of carefully measured performance ratings of soil battery published. In this paper, experiments of two stages with two different scales are conducted to investigate the operation of soil battery, and explore practical application of soil battery in order to produce useful power. Firstly, the results of the experiments are quantified giving a direct idea of the effect of measured variables on soil battery operation and power output. Secondly, the experiment log was adjusted to be smaller scale with less soil but in serial connection mode. Moreover, acid was added to soil to maximize power output practical use purpose. Generally, the 32 serial cells soil battery with 0.6 L acid soil (ph≈5) battery gave about 20V/545 µA power which can light 6 LED lights (1w of each) for about 96 hours, and after that soil replacement will be needed to continue lighting.</p>
