Open access
Free knowledge, shared progress.
The principles
Three freedoms.
Open access is built on three commitments. They are simple, they are universal, and they are what make published research truly public.
Free to read.
Every paper accessible to anyone, anywhere. No subscription, no paywall, no login. From the moment it is published.
Free to share.
Distribute, repost, translate, archive. No restrictions on redistribution. Knowledge is meant to travel.
Free to build on.
Reuse, remix, extend. Under CC BY licensing, anyone can build on the work with proper attribution. That is how research grows.
See the difference
No paywall.
Some publishers lock their research behind subscriptions. We don't. Every paper we publish is free to read, free to share, and free to build on.

What it means for you.
Open access isn't just a publishing model. It's a different relationship with research, one that puts you closer to it, whether you are reading, citing, or publishing.
01
Your work is found.
Every paper is indexed by Google Scholar, Crossref, OpenAlex, DOAJ, and ORCID. Discoverable from day one, from anywhere a researcher searches.
02
Your work reaches further.
Open access papers travel further, find more readers, and gather more citations than research locked behind paywalls. Your work goes where it matters.
03
You keep your copyright.
Published under CC BY 4.0 licensing, you retain ownership of your work. You decide how it is reused, translated, or built upon.
04
You meet funder mandates.
Publishing with Caravel keeps you aligned with Plan S, UKRI, NIH, Horizon Europe, and most major funder open access requirements worldwide.
Our vision.
Academic publishing has not always served the people who produce the research. Authors are often asked to pay to publish, while readers are asked to pay to read. The work of writing, reviewing, and editing falls to researchers, and the value created flows elsewhere. We think there is a better way.
At Caravel Press, every paper is open from the day it is published. There is no subscription, no reader paywall, and no embargo. Articles are peer reviewed, published under a CC BY licence, indexed for discovery, and preserved for the long term. Where authors pay an APC, we work with academic societies to keep that cost as low as possible, and waive it for authors who cannot pay.
The direction.
- Expanding society partnerships so the cost of publishing is shared across the research community, rather than carried by individual authors.
- Lowering APCs over time, and offering waivers wherever cost would otherwise stand in the way.
- Investing in editorial standards that uphold rigorous peer review without inflating the cost of publishing.
- Preserving every paper through long-term archiving, so the work remains available decades from now.
Publish with us.
Every paper we publish is open from the day it goes live. Whether you are here to read, to publish, or to partner with us, this is where to begin.
