The routes
Not all open is the same.
Six arrangements. They differ in two things: who pays for the article to be open, and what its licence lets you do with it.
Gold
Every Caravel Press article
- Who pays
- A charge on acceptance, usually met by a funder or an institution. Some fully open journals charge nothing.
- What you may do
- Whatever the licence permits, stated on the article. A Creative Commons licence cannot be revoked once it is granted.
Diamond
- Who pays
- Neither authors nor readers. Institutions, societies or consortia carry the cost between them.
- What you may do
- The same as gold. The difference is who pays, not what the reader gets.
Green
- Who pays
- Nothing for the repository copy. The published version remains available by subscription.
- What you may do
- Read the repository copy. It is often the accepted manuscript rather than the published article, and sometimes only after an embargo.
Hybrid
- Who pays
- A charge for that article, in a journal that also sells subscriptions.
- What you may do
- Whatever that article's licence permits. The rest of the journal remains available by subscription.
Delayed
- Who pays
- Nothing. The journal opens the article once an embargo has run.
- What you may do
- Read it after the embargo. An open licence is often not applied even then.
Bronze
- Who pays
- Nothing.
- What you may do
- Read it on the publisher's site. With no licence applied, redistribution, translation, text mining and deposit are not permitted, and the publisher is under no obligation to keep the article free.

A licence is a list of permissions. Creative Commons licences are the same list with different things removed.

No rights are transferred when publishing with us. These are yours before you submit and after we publish.

We publish under a licence you grant us. Nothing is assigned, and there is no form that asks you to.

The submitted manuscript, the accepted one or the published article, in any repository, with no embargo and no permission to ask for.
Repository policyYou may reuse your own work without asking
In a thesis, a book, a lecture, a grant application or another paper. The licence covers everyone, and that includes you.

The article is registered with Crossref on publication, and the address in the citation is the address it keeps.
