Diamond open access

Accessible and free.

What is open access?

Open access (OA) means research is made freely available online, without barriers to reading, sharing, or reuse (with proper attribution). It is rooted in the principle that knowledge should be a public good, accessible to everyone.

The Bethesda Statement on Open Access Publishing and the Berlin Declaration on Open Access highlight two essential commitments: ensuring readers can freely access and build upon published work, and safeguarding long-term preservation of scholarly outputs.

At Caravel Press, open access does not mean compromising quality. All submissions undergo the same rigorous peer review and editorial standards as traditional journals. We ensure that published works are indexed, preserved, and remain part of the permanent scholarly record.

We believe open access expands the reach of research, strengthens collaboration, and helps knowledge travel further, without restriction.

Diamond open access

Diamond Open Access (DOA) is considered the most equitable model of scholarly publishing. Unlike other approaches, diamond OA ensures that research is both free to read and free to publish. In this model, authors are not charged article processing charges (APCs), and readers are never asked to pay for access. Instead, the costs of publishing are supported through partnerships, with academic societies, universities, funding agencies, and other institutions that share the belief that research should remain a public good.

Our approach

At Caravel Press, open access is at the heart of what we do. We believe knowledge should be available to everyone, not locked behind paywalls. That’s why all our publications are free to read, carefully peer reviewed, and permanently archived for future generations.

We also know that publishing comes with costs. In collaboration with academic organisations, such as the World Society of Sustainable Energy Technologies (WSSET), we work to keep article processing charges (APCs) as low as possible. Our aim is simple: to ensure that every researcher, wherever they are, whatever resources they have, can share their work on a fair and equal footing.

Open access should mean research that is freely accessible, fair, and built to last.

Our vision

We are committed to making diamond open access a reality. Our key goals are:

  • Partnering with institutions and societies to secure financial support that replaces author-facing charges.
  • Developing sustainable funding models that cover publishing costs without shifting the burden onto researchers.
  • Investing in editorial and production efficiency to keep costs low while maintaining high publishing standards.
  • Building long-term preservation agreements to ensure open access articles remain freely available for generations.
  • Piloting diamond OA journals within our portfolio as a pathway toward expanding the model across all titles.

Article Processing Charges (APCs) vary based on journal scope, article length, and production requirements. Fee structures are reviewed periodically and may be adjusted without prior notice. Caravel Press endeavours to maintain APCs at the lowest sustainable level through institutional and partner support. Publication timelines, including peer review duration and editorial processing, may vary across journals. Caravel Press does not guarantee specific review or publication dates. All content published by Caravel Press is made available under Creative Commons open access licenses. License terms vary by publication and are displayed on each article or book record. Metadata, Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs), and citation data are supplied through Crossref to ensure reliable indexing and reference integrity. Caravel Press is not responsible for delays or errors arising from third-party indexing services.

Inclusion in external databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, DOAJ, or similar services is determined independently by those organizations. Caravel Press cannot guarantee indexing or impact metrics for any individual publication.

All policies, pricing, and publishing terms are subject to change to reflect updates in industry standards, technical infrastructure, or partner requirements. The latest information is published on the Caravel Press website.
