Special Collection: Decarbonising Cities Through People, Planning, and Technology
Urban areas account for approximately 75% of global energy consumption and 60% of carbon emissions, placing cities at the forefront of climate mitigation and adaptation efforts. In alignment with the journal's mission to promote interdisciplinary approaches to global decarbonisation, this Special Collection highlights research that delivers practical, evidence-based pathways toward climate-resilient and low-carbon urban development.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, urban energy systems, low-carbon infrastructure, sustainable urban planning, climate-responsive design, digital and smart technologies for cities, and community-driven approaches to decarbonisation. Contributions exploring the integration of technological, social, economic, and policy dimensions in achieving net-zero targets are particularly encouraged. The Special Collection also welcomes studies addressing governance frameworks, behavioural change, and innovative planning strategies that support urban sustainability transitions.
In addition to contributions originating from ICEC 2025, this Special Collection invites high-quality submissions from the broader research community. We welcome original research articles, review papers, case studies, and policy analyses that provide actionable insights into decarbonisation at local, national, and global scales. Submissions that contribute to advancing international climate goals, including those aligned with the Paris Agreement, are especially encouraged.
By bridging theory and practice, this Special Collection aims to showcase innovative and scalable solutions that enhance the performance, resilience, and sustainability of urban systems in the transition toward a net-zero future.
