In this paper, a cylindrical combustor with the cone-shaped fluidized bed using sand as inert matter is presented. This laboratory scale combustor was designed for firing up to 100 kg/hr of sawdust delivered onto the fluidized bed of sustainably heated sand. The effects of fuel moisture, as well as operating conditions (load and excess air), on the combustion characteristics were studied in the experimental tests. The temperature profiles as well as gas concentrations for the CO, O2 and CO2 along the combustor height and for some cross-sectional planes were found for three (fixed) bed heights: 20, 30 and 40 cm. For combustor loads of 35 to 82 kg/hr, at excess air of some 60 to 100 %, combustion efficiency was in the range of 95 to 99 %.
