This paper examines the improvement of dryer section heat recovery in operating paper machines. Research has previously been focused on the design of new installations whereas defects in operating paper machines have received little attention. In this study two simulation models were developed, which are able to simulate the performance of heat recovery in different operational situations. The results from three case studies suggest 10 – 15 % savings in process heat.
