Abstract

This study is aimed to investigate characteristics as well as performance of R290 (propane) and compare the performance of R22 and R290 under the same experimental condition. For this purpose, an experimental single stage vapor compression cycle was utilized. The main variables investigated are temperature distribution, energetic performance such as electrical power consumption, refrigerant capacity and performance coefficient of the system (COP). The result shows that propane obtain the same temperature lift compare with R22. R22 gives higher compressor outlet pressure but lower compressor outlet temperature compared to R290. By measuring electrical power consumption, R290 compression power is higher than R22, however, refrigeration capacity of R290 is much higher than R22. Propane shows COP improvement by 3.6% relative to R22
