Abstract

As the concept of sustainable development becomes prominent due to generation of various environmental problems, development of methods for the use of passive energy is being demanded. In order to find such passive design methods, this study examined the characteristics of vernacular housing formation in terms of its important aspect microclimate to understand how vernacular housing controls and utilizes passive energy. For passive design methods, various principles adapting energy to architectures using passive means such as expansion of heating value during winter season and protection against wind, pent roof during summer season, improved ventilation, thermal insulation ability of structures, thermal characteristics of materials, arrangement of architectures, thermal exchange according to changes in underground temperature, and daylight were applied.
