Abstract

To more efficiently utilize the biogas from wastes, a trigeneration scheme has been proposed as a new way of biogas utilization, i.e. generating electric power while hot water and cold water are produced at the same time for hot water supply to the digesters and cooling supply for air-conditioning in nearby buildings. The energy saving and greenhouse gas emission reduction potentials of the biogas trigeneration in Hong Kong were investigated. This scheme could reduce primary energy consumption by 1.2 percent and greenhouse gas emission by 5.7 percent in Hong Kong if all the collected biogas from waste treatment was used for trigeneration. Investigation results show that the biogas trigeneration is an effective method for utilizing the biogas produced from waste treatment.
