Abstract

Wind energy, with an average growth rate of 30%, is the fastest growing source of renewable energy in the world. India occupies the 4th place in the world in wind energy generation after Germany, the USA and Spain, and has an installed capacity of more than 7845 MW as of 31st December 2007. New technological developments in wind energy design have contributed for the significant advances in wind energy penetration and to get optimum power from available wind. In this study, wind energy scenario in the world in general and in India in particular is presented. Opportunities under the climate policy instruments and potential barriers for the large-scale dissemination of wind energy projects are explored. The future growth pattern to achieve the maximum utilization potential of wind energy projects in India is analyzed.
