Road test results on 25 Mitsubishi MieV battery electric vehicles are compared with campus data on 5 hydrogen fuel cell hybrid vehicles powered by 350 bar hydrogen feeding a 1.2 kW PEM fuel cell to charge a lead acid battery pack. The battery vehicle was excellent in city commuting but was limited to 56 mile journeys and required 5 hour charging. By contrast, the hydrogen vehicle with 2 kg tank was capable of 200 miles with 4 minute charging. It is shown that the performance was better than that of a standard diesel van in an academic test following a 1.5 mile circuit around the campus. The acceleration and drive cycle compliance were found to be adequate on campus. Improvements in the hybrid drive train will lead to significant increase in efficiency.
