Hydrogen fuel produced by solar photovoltaic modules and eletrolyzer can be a solution to problems of global warming, air pollution and fossil fuel crisis. The efficiency of photovoltaic-electrolyzer system can be promoted by the optimal matching between photovoltaic modules and electrolyzer. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of photovoltaic cell and electrolyzer are obtained from experimental tests. Based on these characteristics, a series –parallel connection of photovoltaic cells is determined to match with electrolyzer. The aim is to match the voltage and maximum power output of the photovoltaic modules to the operating voltage of the electrolyzer. So some auxiliaries such as DC-DC converter, maximum power point(MPP) tracking unit are omitted. In this way, the cost and resistances in the circuit are greatly reduced. Based on the tested operating parameters, the mathematical models of photovoltaic cell and electrolyzer are developed to guide photovoltaic (PV)-electrolyzer system.
