South Korea’s major cities are densely populated with very limited resources and now the country is the ninth largest carbon dioxide (CO2) emitter in the world. This environmental issue will eventually affect the nation’s ecological, political, economic and social systems as a whole in the future. To secure the increasing need in energy for future generations, major construction companies leading housing market have begun applying renewable energy sources to recent sustainable housing projects. This study presents status quo of the renewable energy situation and assesses potential renewable energy sources for future housing projects; solar, geothermal and wind energy in Korea. By adopting guidelines with the Korean government’s support, increasing renewable energy production will result in lowering dependency on foreign energy sources and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
