Abstract

A liquid-desiccant air-conditioning system is a dehumidification system in which LiCl solution is used as the working fluid. Such a system can be driven by low-grade heat sources; it can dehumidify air without condensing and supply clean air using the LiCl solution, which possesses antimicrobial properties. In this study, we focus on a hybrid liquid-desiccant air-conditioning system. The efficiency of this system is extremely high because it uses waste heat from a heat pump. Such a system is composed of numerous elements owing to the fact that it is a combination of a liquid-desiccant system and a heat pump, and hence, its working is extremely complex. Therefore, the characteristics of this system have not been clarified yet. The objective of this study is to evaluate the basic characteristics of a hybrid liquid-desiccant air-conditioning system through experiments and simulations. It is determined that the coefficient of performance (COP) of the system is approximately 2.8, although a COP of approximately 5.8 is certainly achievable.
