Abstract

Recent global climate change and increasing worldwide demand for electricity requires need for harnessing different kinds of renewable energies like wind energy. In this paper, wind power potential, technical and economical feasibility for Binalood area in Iran was investigated. The potential of wind power generation was statistically analyzed. The mean hourly wind speed data of the region for 2007 to 2010 was adopted and analyzed in order to determine the potential of wind power generation. The numerical values of the dimensionless Weibull shape parameter (k) and Weibull scale parameter (c) were also determined. Wind power density and wind energy density of the region shows that the area is suitable for installation of wind turbines. At present, about 0.17 percent of Iran’s required electricity is being provided by wind energy. It was seen from analysis that Binalood is one of the most important locations in Iran with high wind potential to provide electricity.
