This paper analyzes the management strategies of a residential microgrid energy storage subsystem. The goal is to improve the microgrid features and the quality of the power profile exchanged with the utility grid. The microgrid under study integrates several subsystems; namely, a solar photovoltaic (PV) subsystem, a wind power subsystem, a storage subsystem and a load subsystem. A novel energy management strategy calculates the power of the storage subsystem as the sum of three components. First, a compensatory component to balance the differences between the power consumed and the power generated as a function of the storage subsystem state of charge (SOC). A second component to stabilize the SOC of the storage subsystem around the mid-point. Finally, a third component to filter the profile of the power exchanged with the utility grid, to eliminate power fluctuations.
