Abstract

Energy saving by increasing the efficiency of energy in road lighting installations provide an important economical and environmental benefit. In this study, it is aimed to analyze the results of energy savings in the road lighting system of Tirana by using a new remote control and management system. The system was applied on 25% of public lighting network in Tirana. The new system acts on voltage stabilization and regulation and uses power reducing equipment for high pressure sodium lamps to alleviate their performance. The result has been satisfactory resulting with an energy saving of about 30-40%. The total annual cost is affected strongly by maintenance costs. Based on implementation-running costs and saving results, the new remote control and management system is cost-effective and with a very short payback time of around 2.1 years. It contributes also in the reduction of CO2 emissions with an annual reduction around 545 tonnes equivalent of CO2.
