Abstract

A lab-scale, batch-type single bed adsorption desalination (AD) system, employing silica gel-water as adsorber-adsorbate pair has been developed. The main advantages of the AD cycle are; (i) Its ability to utilize low temperature waste or renewable heat source (ii) has almost no major moving parts, (ii) low maintenance and (iii) environmental friendly. The extent of effective cooling from evaporator in terms of evaporation based co-efficient of performance (COP) and specific cooling capacity (SCC) has been estimated with respect to inlet coolant water temperatures. In the current study, it has been observed that the overall heat transfer co-efficient (U), specific cooling capacity (SCC) and co-efficient of performance (COP) are influenced linearly by the inlet coolant temperature inside the evaporator.
