Abstract

As a part of the energy transition, urban development planning needs a strategic energy concept at the urban level. Although this topic is structured and expressed in different ways for different cities, all strategic approaches consist of similar concepts; for example, the reduction of CO2 emissions and the use of energy from low carbon technologies or renewable energy sources rather than from fossil fuel sources. Efficient implementation for new and existing buildings in the urban area can be achieved by the combination of a sustainable energy concept and land use planning. In order to implement a city-wide plan systematically, each city district must be developed according to its unique sustainable energy and development plan. This approach provides the framework for urban quarter concepts and local development plans. A post-war quarter in Ludwigsburg, Germany was selected as case study for the analysis of the energy efficient refurbishment concepts and new methods of energy supply. The main focus of the case study is the enhancement of the energy performance of urban structures by applying integrated approaches for energy efficiency at the neighbourhood level. “Integration” is the core concept of this project and is applied at every level of planning.

Keywords. Energy efficient refurbishment; rehabilitation concept; neighbourhood (urban quarter) refurbishment scenarios
