Abstract
Towards transforming Jubail Industrial College (JIC) campus into a sustainable “Green Campus”, it is the aim of this design/research effort to start with addressing the most chronic problem encountered by JIC personnel that has to do with car parking and the increasing number of students, trainees, teachers, support staff and management team. By addressing and combating this chronic problem, JIC should be able to achieve the following: 1. Reducing Greenhouse Emissions inside JIC campus. 2. Reducing Carbon Footprint. 3. Reducing traffic congestion within JIC campus. 4. Educating the society and the neighboring industry about sustainable practices which will make JIC a pioneer and a role model to others. 5. Contributing actively in the well-being of JIC personnel and students as continual walking and cycling is very essential in sustainable health and increasing life expectancy. 6. Changing the behavior of JIC personnel and students and making them more aware about their responsibility towards their planet. 7. Contributing in RC policy of Corporate Social Responsibility ‘CSR’ by inviting and allowing visitations of community and industry personnel to JIC campus. 8. Recycle solid waste inside JIC. 9. Reduce electric bill. For all those reasons, it is proposed to start an operational project with cooperation and support of King Abdul-Aziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), with coordination with colleges and universities sector in royal commission. The project is titled “JIC Green Initiative Project”, and it is divided into five main sections. Multi-story Green Car Parks, Solid waste recycling inside JIC, to establish Renewable Energy Centre, calculation of JIC carbon foot print, architectural design of JIC campus and green car park, and solar energy and wind energy implementations for JIC street lights and existing buildings. Water heating accounts for about 30 percent of an average household’s total greenhouse gas emissions and about the same proportion of total energy use. At Jubail Industrial College (JIC) Campus, water heating by conventional methods consumes about 1.2 MW of electricity and 3500 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year. As a drive to make JIC campus zero emission place, it is the intent of this research to replace the conventional electric geysers by solar water heating systems. Using solar energy to heat water produces no harmful greenhouse gas emissions. It can provide up to 90 percent of total hot water requirements, depending on the climate and the model of heaters.
