Abstract

A numerical model describing freezing heat transfer process of water in an ice storage ball filled with aluminum foams was presented by considering both phase change heat transfer and natural convection. Freezing heat transfer process of water with aluminum foams was numerically simulated. To determine the enhancement effects of the aluminum foams, the simulation results were correlated against those for an ice storage ball filled with pure water. Temperature distributions and velocity fields of fluid as well as phase change interface position changed with time were simulated. The simulation results showed that freezing time in an ice storage ball with aluminum foams was greatly shorter than that without aluminum foams water only. The effect of porosity of aluminum foams and ball diameter on the liquid fraction and the time for complete freezing was also studied.
