Abstract

Conventional vapour compression based cooling system consumes significant amount of primary energy, and also utilizes refrigerants which causes the depletion of the ozone zone. As an alternative, liquid desiccant cooling system has the advantages of energy efficient and environmental benign, and the ability to be driven by low grade energy. This review paper aims to summarize recent research development progress for liquid desiccant cooling system. The present study is undertaken from the following aspects including background, working principle of liquid desiccant cooling system, system configurations and governing equations. The working performance of hybrid liquid desiccant system with various desiccants (single or mixture), the different system configurations for dehumidifier and regenerator are also included. It can be concluded that the hybrid liquid desiccant cooling system could offer energy efficient solutions for hot and humid climate at the expense of less primary energy.

Keywords. Liquid desiccant cooling; hybrid system; dehumidification and regeneration
