International energy trading in times of geopolitical conflicts: role of blockchain
, ,
Abstract
In this research paper, we explore the intersection of the energy market and blockchain technology in the context of newly introduced policies. Our focus is on understanding how blockchain, including products like NFTs (non-fungible tokens), can impact on the market during times of conflict and regulatory changes. Geopolitical tensions often disrupt energy markets, affecting supply chains, prices, and access to critical resources. Energy trading has become a strategic tool for nations to secure reliable energy sources, manage risks, and respond to geopolitical challenges. Several factors are reshaping the energy landscape, including technological advancements, evolving policies, and the urgent need for sustainable energy solutions. Amidst this transformation, international energy markets play a crucial role, connecting nations and influencing economic growth and environmental impact. However, conflicts can disrupt existing trade channels. The research highlights those cryptographic ledgers, such as those used in blockchain, maintain immutable records of energy transactions, reducing fraud and enhancing accountability. To foster an independent environment, clear regulations for blockchain-based energy trading are essential. Global case studies, with a focus on smart contracts and tokenization, demonstrate their influence on the global economy. Regulatory frameworks must be adopted to accommodate decentralized energy markets. International agreements promoting cross-border energy cooperation are crucial. It was found that implementation of blockchain impacts its alignment with the principles of the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT). Additionally, privacy regulations, including General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). Striking a balance between transparency, zero-knowledge proofs, privacy layers, and common protocols for energy data exchange is vital. While cryptographic ledger-based markets may transcend typical regulations, they should adhere to their own established and generalized principles.
