An investigation of the performance of CHPs and air/ground source heat pump systems for application in domestic buildings in the UK has been made. Typical space heating and hot water loads for various domestic buildings and occupancy are considered, and the carbon dioxide emission saving potential of CHP and air source and ground source heat pumps are analysed on the basis of weather conditions and system efficiency. The results are useful to architects and building services engineers to assist selection of the optimum approach to reducing carbon intensity.
