A Study on the Carbonation Reactivity of CO2 and Spent Oil Sand with Chemical Pre-treatment
, ,
Abstract
These days, the crude oil price is fluctuated at big width. This situation brings out the instability of the crude oil price. Oil sand is attracting interest due to stable petroleum resources supplying, high crude prices, and reserve concerns. In this study, the research was performed for fixing CO2 in spent oil sand which was generated from the process of bitumen extraction using the combustion process. For the fixing CO2 in removed bitumen spent oil sand, the experiment entrapped carbonation to fix CO2 since CaO solution was soaked in spent oil sand. The chemical pre-treatment was performed by using sulfuric and acetic acid solution in order to improving this reactivity. As the chemical pre-treatment, it removed impurity and expanded porous of spend oil sand by using acid. A comparison was made among the performance with different chemical pre-treatment time, such as 1, 2, 3, 6, and 12 hrs, to evaluate the carbonation of spent oil sand and CO2 by ThermoGravimetric Analysis (TGA). The two types of surface (before/after chemical pre-treatment) were analyzed through SEM. As a result, the chemical pre-treatment with sulfuric acid solution has higher carbonation reactivity than the other one which was performed with acetic acid for all the cases of experiments. According to SEM analysis, the case of pre-treatment with sulfuric acid was better pore than the other one with acetic acid.
