Abstract

The present work is focused towards the design of an air cooling system for truck cabin using waste heat from engine exhaust. The available options in heat generated cooling have been critically reviewed. The vapour adsorption refrigeration cycle is found to be suitable for transport trucks as the system can operate in mobile applications. Silica gel and water are proposed to be the suitable adsorbent - refrigerant pair. The mass balance and energy balance equations used to design the proposed system and the design of the system are presented for a 100 bhp truck cabin. Cooling load for cabin cooling has been obtained as 1 TR. Minimum useful heat available in the exhaust is10.25 kW. The COP of the proposed system is 0.47 and heat required to drive the proposed system is 7.5 kW. The dimensions of the proposed system components have been obtained and found to be suitable for transport truck.
