Abstract

In this paper, the mathematical model is developed for a solar-assisted heat pump water heater with an innovative truncated-cone-type evaporator. The solar radiation absorbed by this system is calculated for a typical day (17th January) in Kunming, China with this mathematical model. The results show that a solar-assisted heat pump water heater with a truncated-cone-type evaporator absorbs significantly more solar radiation than a solar-assisted heat pump water heater with a cylindrically-shaped evaporator. Hence, the system with the truncated-cone-type evaporator will have significantly enhanced thermal performance and efficiency than the system with the cylindrically-shaped evaporator.
