Abstract

Construction industry addresses not only the importance of economic values but also the development of construction methods to contribute environmental issues. This paper introduces the multi-residential hybrid composite frame system of tower type as a more viable alternative to bearing wall structure system. Bearing wall apartment doesn't satisfy consumers for the lack of architectural plan flexibility and constraints in remodelling project. For such reason, apartment is reconstructed for the consumer satisfaction, generating more construction wastes that increase CO2 emissions However, hybrid composite frame system consisting of steel, reinforcement and pre-cast concrete makes it easier to remodel, maintain apartment housings and deliver more flexible architectural plan, keeping the floor height at the same level as in bearing wall structures. This paper collected and compared data on construction material quantity for bearing wall and hybrid composite frame apartments of tower type including concrete, reinforcement, steel, and formwork. It also presents contrasting designs of bearing wall and green frame apartments respectively to compare and highlight difference in construction material quantity. The study founds herein will contribute considerably to improving the service life of apartment housings in Korea.
