The energy demand in Tanzania is higher than the available capacity from the national utility company. The electricity capacity of the utility is less than the demand and more energy is lost in several ways where a huge loss is experienced in buildings. By managing the energy use in buildings, more energy can be available for use which can lead to national development. This paper looks on the case studies of energy situation in Tanzania. The paper also looks on how energy monitoring and analysis can help in energy conservation processes led by consumers and the utility company. Here we propose a monitoring method specifically useful for countries like Tanzania which are affected by rolling blackouts in peak demand times or dry season when the power generated by the hydro plant is not enough.
Keywords. Energy monitoring; rolling blackouts; shadow billing; Time of Use tariff
