An investigation was made to study the influence of adding small amounts of hydrogen to gasoline-air mixtures on the number of misfire cycles in an SI engine operating under lean burn conditions. The test engine was run at 2000 rpm and spark timing was set to MBT (minimum spark advance for best torque). A lean mixture with air-fuel ratio of 1.26 was used, and hydrogen was added in the amounts 2.14%, 5.28% and 7.74% by volume. The in-cylinder pressure was recorded over 1000 consecutive engine cycles. From the pressure measurements, the indicated mean effective pressure (imep) time series was calculated. The imep time series revealed that as the amount of hydrogen addition increases, the number of misfire cycles decreases. In particular, with 7.74% hydrogen addition, the number misfire cycles is reduced significantly.
