Abstract

Since high temperature superconductivity (HTS) discovery in 1986, studies on the HTS have been increasing rapidly in real life applications. As the decrease in cost of cryogenic cooling system, HTS application in electric power system will be increased. Superconductors tape and coils have likely to be integrated in a variety of power system application such as, transformers, fault current limiters, motors, generators, power cables and magnetic energy storage devices. In order to improve the total efficiency, control and stability of power system, applying the superconducting power apparatus is of vital importance. In this study, the examples in the areas of HTS advancement are given in Turkey and the World. Then, the technical and economic contributions of these superconductivity developments in the field of power system are evaluated for sustainability of the energy. It is concluded that when HTS utilization become commercially available and widely used in the power system, technical loss will be decreased in huge amounts. Besides, performance of the power system will be enhanced enormously.
