Abstract

A novel solar building is constructed in Hefei, China. The building made of wood structure occupies an area of 265.6m² with solar panels of 220m². The building realizes its functions in four aspects of solar-power, solar space heating, solar-cooling and solar-hot water producing. The related novel solar technologies and components such as Photovoltaic-Trombe wall (PTW), dual-function solar collector (DFC), water type PV/T collector (PVT), shutter-type Trombe wall (STW), heat pipe vacuum tube collector (HPVC), capillary radiation terminal devices (CRTD), absorption chiller and liquid desiccant dehumidification system (LDDS) driven by solar thermal energy are applied in this building. The solar systems can operate in different modes to meet the energy demands in different seasons. In winter, DFC in wall, PTW and STW are applied for space heating in passive mode. At the same time, the DFCs on roof are used to heat the air in active mode. In summer, the hot water around 60°C produced by DFC and PVT is used for LDDS, which deals with the fresh air to decrease the temperature and humidity. Meanwhile the hot water around 95°C produced by HPVC is applied to drive the absorption chiller. Then the chilled water made by absorption chiller, is supplied to CRTD and LDDS to cool the entire building. Moreover DFC, PTW and STW can reduce the heat gain in summer. In addition, the electricity generated by PVT and PTW is sent to local electric networks, reducing the office electricity demand. The hot water produced by PVT and HPVC also can be supplied all year around. All of these individual energy systems form a hybrid system and are well integrated with the building. Preliminary simulation by TRNSYS shows that the demonstration building could reduce 40% of auxiliary energy consumption compared with the same scale of office building in winter for space heating.
