Abstract

This paper presents the heat transfer enhancement and corresponding pressure drop over a flat surface having square and circular channels. The channel has a cross sectional area of 2.25×2.25 mm². Flow and heat transfer characteristics are presented for Reynolds numbers from 100 to 350 based on the fin thickness. Numerical simulation is validated with the published experimental results of the previous investigators and good agreement is observed. A SIMPLE code using finite element approach is developed for solving Navier–Stokes equations with conjugate energy equations for both fluid and solid regions. Thermal performances and effectiveness as well as pressure drag co-efficient of perforated and solid fins are determined and compared. Higher performances for perforated fins are observed and reduced pressure drop is observed for the fins having circular channels.
