The Kalina cycle is a novel thermodynamic cycle used in low-grade heat utilization and sustainable energy utilization. In this paper, the Peng-Robinson equation was used to calculate the properties of ammonia-water mixture, the working fluid of the Kalina cycle. On this basis, an exergy analysis on a single-stage distillation Kalina cycle is presented. The exergy efficiency can be significantly improved by the increase of inlet pressure and temperature of turbine which are also subjected to the limitations of existing technologies and engineering economy. The exergy efficiency of the Kalina cycle can be improved by the increase of concentration of working solution which has an optimal value which causes the lowest exergy loss. However, the cycle mass ratio and the concentration of basic solution cannot influence the cycle performance significantly due to some limitations. The exergy efficiency of evaporator mainly depends on the concentration of working solution and evaporation pressure. While the inlet pressure of turbine and the concentration of working solution influence the exergy efficiency of condenser. From the analysis, it can be found that among all the parameters, the concentration of working solution is the key to influence the exergy performance of the Kalina cycle.
