Abstract

In this work, the multi-stage flash (MSF) process and the multiple-effect distillation (MED) process are combined together using thermal vapor compressor (TVC) to form a combined cycle of distillation (CCD) plant to produce desalted water with high-gain output ratio (GOR). The technologies of MSF, MED and TVC have already been proven and are available as commercial plants in international markets in many countries where the combination is called combined cycle of distillation (CCD) plant. The CCD system has a special coupling and configuration that uses nine stages of MSF process, seven Effects of MED process and two apparatus of TVC. Stage #6 has a special configuration to adapt the new configuration. The capital cost of the CCD plant decreased by increasing the GOR and by decreasing the number of MSF stages. The design of CCD plant includes some modification on the conventional design of MSF and MED plants. The following are the main features of CCD plant, with the GOR able to reach around 20 and specific power consumption decreasing to less than 3.5 kWh/m³. The calculations, results and drawings have been generated and proven using the following three types of software: Engineering Equation Solver (main program), Matlab R2016b and Microsoft Developer Studio (FORTRAN power Station 4.0).
