The need to replace conventional CFC and HCFC based air conditioning with alternatives that neither damage the ozone layer nor contribute to global warming has brought about a revival of interest in the use of evaporative cooling methods to provide thermal comfort in buildings. Evaporative cooling methods also have the advantages of low cost, low energy consumption and use of simple technology. New materials and methods to improve and replace some of the existing techniques for evaporative cooling are under investigation by researchers. This paper presents a mathematical model and experimental results for a porous ceramic evaporative cooling system. The model is based on heat and mass transfer associated with evaporative cooling processes.
