Abstract

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is considered an essential component for sustainable development. In spite of the relatively good telecommunication infrastructure in Yemen the number of ICT centres in rural areas is very little. Examining a number of factors has shown high feasibility of ICT centres installation in rural areas. These factors are: wide coverage of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) third generation (3G) mobile networks and fixed wireless network, high market potentials, low percentage of electricity supply coverage, and high availability of solar radiation. This paper discusses the feasibility of introducing ICT facilities in rural areas powered by PV. In addition the paper introduces implementation proposal by means of a pilot project design. Finally, the paper assesses the impact of ICT on the population life in rural areas.
