A biomass energy system integrating a fixed-bed downdraft gasifier and a steam generator with a producer gas furnace and a convective heat transfer section with once-through water tubes was demonstrated. 1.5t/d spent mushroom bed generated from an artificial mushroom factory was used as feedstock, which was dried and pelletised before being gasified. The boiler was fuelled with the un-cooled producer gas with a typical low heat value of 4.3-4.6MJ/m³ N-dry. The producer gas compositions in both of a full load operation and a part load operation were enough stable to sustain combustion in the boiler and steam production.
