Abstract

Ground-coupled heat pump (GCHP) systems are becoming more and more popular for air conditioning both in residential and commercial buildings. In order to find how much energy can really be saved by GCHP system for temperate region, an on-site measurement was carried out on a GCHP system installed on campus of Hebei University of Engineering in China. The temperature distributions of borehole and ground soil around borehole at different depths were measured for finding the ground temperature field. The operation performance of GCHP system including circulating water temperature, heat extraction from and rejection into building, power consumption of system and refrigerator pressure when the GCHP system operated in intermittent and continuous modes were recorded. It is indicated that the GCHP system’s COP is better for intermittent mode but lower for continuous mode. The GHE is found to be undersized for the existing GCHP system, a hybrid GCHP system by adding supplemental heat rejecter should be used to achieve better performance.
